Ogiri (also known as ogiri-jeun, ogiri seeds, or fermented oil seeds) is a traditional West African condiment made from fermented melon seeds—primarily from the Citrullus lanatus (egusi melon) or Parkia biglobosa (African locust bean).
Ogiri isn’t just flavorful—it’s also nutritionally valuable:
- Rich in Protein: Melon seeds are a good source of plant-based protein, supporting muscle growth and repair.
- High in Healthy Fats: Contains essential fatty acids that support heart and brain health.
- Probiotic Properties: The natural fermentation process introduces beneficial bacteria that support gut health and digestion.
- Source of Minerals: Provides iron, magnesium, and zinc, which are vital for immune function and energy metabolism.
- Natural Flavor Enhancer: Reduces the need for artificial flavorings or excessive salt in cooking.
- Tips for Use:
- Crush or grate a small piece of Ogiri and sauté in oil before adding other ingredients.
- Use in soups and stews like bitterleaf soup, egusi soup, or oha soup.
- Combine with onions, peppers, and locust beans (iru) for a robust flavor base.
- Store in a cool, dry place—refrigeration extends shelf life.
Note: Due to its strong aroma, start with a small amount and adjust to taste.
